The past couple of days, I have been asked about last minute gifts. When I asked, "Why are you asking me?" Then laughing curiously. The person almost always replied, "Because you know these type of people." Well, that isn't always true, because everyone is different. I posted last minute stocking stuffers and then anytime gift ideas for the Single Parent, so now, what about the elderly, senior adult? Depending on what stage of life they are at, their needs may be different. Are they independent? Living at home? Living in a nursing facility and if so, what level? Living with a family member? There are many things to consider, but don't make it difficult. There needs are just like yours. What do you like? Then think about a few of these things:

easy to manage kitchen utensils

alarm clock (easy to set/large numbers)

stamps and cards

address book

calendar

watch and/or battery replacement (large numbers)

photo albums (label each photo if you add them)

Gift basket with:

lotions, baby powder, perfume or cologne, lip balm, bath soaps

socks (especially diabetic socks, they are expensive for them)

robe and house shoes

simple groceries

snack foods

gift card for personal pads

vitamins (know what they take)

art class

radio/cd with batteries

batteries, lots of them

magnifying lamp

a dance

large print Bible

large print subscriptions to their favorite publications

coloring is excellent memory boasters

word search books

crossword puzzles

bath towel set

"The Year You Were Born" sheet printed pretty

weather alert

cell phone minutes

music lessons

mowed lawn

worship hymns on CD

large size bibs

wipes

hand sanitizer

square dancing lessons

lap blanket or quilt

hanging bag for walker

wallet, fanny pack, lanyard

gloves and scarf

reading lights

birdhouse and birdseed

time

These are only a few things. Random acts of kindness that can change a life or even two. Children and pets can really make a difference in the life of an elderly person in just one afternoon. Think about the next time you are in the coffee shop or cafe, take time to sit and talk to an older individual, you just may gain some wisdom for living you never had. Regardless, you took time to listen and that was indeed your gift gained for the day.

Hugs, Rita
